He Told Me He Loved Me (2026)
66cm x 99cm
Cotton muslin and cotton thread
Silent,
Silenced.
Truth, stitched,
Shame, whispered.
Searching for the voice
within.
The strength
to speak,
To scream what they told
me to leave
unspoken.
This series of hand-stitched embroideries explores the aftermath of sexual assault and the enduring effects of trauma on the body and psyche. Through the act of stitching, light is drawn on experiences that are often hidden or silenced.
Embroidery, traditionally associated with domesticity, care and repair, is employed here as a means of confrontation rather than concealment. The slow and repetitive nature of stitching echoes the persistence of trauma, while the red and white threads evoke both wound and healing, pain and growth.
Through the fragmented female figures and fragments of text, the work addresses the complexities of survival, vulnerability and embodiment. Through the tension between delicacy and discomfort, this series of embroideries gives form to experiences that are too often hidden, silenced or suppressed.
